MIT HEALS UROP and SuperUROP Information Session

The HEALS SuperUROP is an academic year-long, fully funded research experience. Students benefit from a structured program consisting of research supervised by a faculty mentor in the fall and spring semesters, and the required 6.UAR class, which teaches skills for scientific communication, writing papers, and presenting research, along with biotech seminars and mentorship.

The HEALS Summer UROP is a one-term program that supports students in conducting HEALS-aligned research with community-building programming. HEALS UROPs are offered in summer, fall, and spring terms.

  • Health + Life Sciences Focus: Research projects in areas such as biomedical engineering, diagnostics, systems biology, and translational medicine
  • Clinical Mentorship: Students will be paired with mentors from clinical or biotech settings
  • Professional Exposure: Site visits to biotech companies and hospitals
  • HEALS Showcase: Students present their work at a dedicated health/life sciences session as part of the SuperUROP fall showcase

Students in the HEALS SuperUROP Track will participate in the full 6.UAR curriculum , including:

  • Selecting and refining a research project
  • Conducting background research and literature review
  • Engaging with HEALS-relevant science and entrepreneurship
  • Exploring ethics in engineering and biomedical research
  • Giving an effective research presentation
  • Writing and revising a high-quality research paper

We are working to develop a partnership with the NEET program to offer hands-on lab and clinical training tailored to HEALS students. This would replace some EECS-focused content with more directly relevant coursework. This addition is targeted for launch in Year 2 (Fall 2026), pending coordination.

The HEALS Fall UROP deadline is September 9, 2025.

The application for the 2025-2026 academic year HEALS SuperUROP program has closed. Applications for the 2026-2027 academic year will open in spring 2026.

HEALS summer UROPs made connections across research areas and labs at an ice cream social in July 2025.
  • Academic credit or pay
  • Membership in a HEALS-focused cohort of students across departments, disciplines, and research areas — creating a vibrant community united by shared interests in health and life sciences
  • SuperUROP only: Access to tailored programming, clinical mentorship, and cross-lab connections that support personal growth and professional exploration in translational science
  • SuperUROP only: HEALS digital badge + certificate of completion
